About the Work:
This unique, hand-embellished A4 print is a limited edition of only 236, carefully preserved from CB Hoyo’s Public Service performance, which debuted in Cologne, Germany, in the fall of 2021. This piece is an extraordinary artifact from the installation, where over 10,000 prints were created with the option for the audience to collect or destroy them. Only 236 of these survived, making each print a rare testament to Hoyo's vision.
In Public Service, CB Hoyo invited participants into a surreal bureaucratic environment, complete with found objects, embosser seals, and a looming paper shredder as the centerpiece. This installation/performance allowed the audience to experience the frustrations and absurdities of bureaucracy—a theme deeply personal to Hoyo, who draws from his experiences as a Cuban navigating endless administrative hurdles. This piece explores questions of value and destruction, challenging audiences to examine their perception of art versus non-art, and the role of bureaucracy in legitimizing or trivializing creative expression.
Each print from this edition carries Hoyo’s intent and reflects the social experiment posed by Public Service: what drives the audience to preserve, alter, or discard art? How does bureaucracy affect artistic worth, and how does this environment mirror our own value systems?
