About the Work:
This is an exceptionally rare unembellished semi shredded stack of conjoined prints from CB Hoyo’s Public Service performance, held in Cologne, Germany, in 2021. As part of the original series of 10,000 prints created for the installation, this particular piece was created by accident when the paper shreder jammed later it was preserved by CB Hoyo for archival purposes, making it the only one that almost escaped either destruction or embellishment in the performance’s unique bureaucratic process.
In Public Service, CB Hoyo invited participants into a fictional, bureaucratic office where viewers were encouraged to interact with prints that could be collected, authenticated, or even destroyed in an elaborate display of bureaucratic absurdity. The installation’s centerpiece—a precarious paper shredder—symbolized the tension between creation and destruction, mirroring the complexities of assigning value to art. Hoyo’s piece draws on personal experience with bureaucratic systems, presenting a provocative social experiment questioning art’s value and the lengths people go to for its preservation or elimination. This unembellished print, untouched by the performance’s red-tape rituals, is a rare snapshot of Hoyo’s original intent, capturing the artist’s reflection on bureaucracy and art’s impermanence.
